Academic Strategic Plan
College has been an experience unlike any other. Being four hours away from my home and my family was not something I was prepared for. However, as I said in my “This I Believe” statement, you can never be prepared for everything. Thus far, I have taken college as it has come to me. I have made critical decisions when necessary, and I have taken the necessary steps and precautions needed to further my education and persona. Coming to Cincinnati, I knew few people here. A select few people came here from my high school. When school started, I took advantage of opportunities that presented themselves in order to meet new people and develop as a person. College has provided many unique challenges and opportunities that I would not have experienced otherwise.
In the next few years I hope to further myself in the student groups I am involved in and become a leader amongst my peers. I am already involved in multiple groups. The next step is to become a leader in those groups. Leadership is the Honors theme I aim to develop in my college career. The best way to be a leader on campus is to put myself out there: make sure people know who I am and what I am about. Academic success is another excellent method to show my abilities and concern for things I am involved in. In general, people who care about school care about everything else in a similar fashion. Aside from maintaining my high GPA, I will work to enhance my leadership abilities. Over the summer I plan to read up on leadership styles and techniques. Furthermore, the best way to mature as a leader is to practice being a leader.
The University Honors Program will provide the support and means to further my leadership development. Provided, as an honors seminar, is a Leadership Development lecture which I hope to take to grow. Also, in the next year, I hope to become one of the executive members in my fraternity. I will be a directing my peers and helping them to grow if I become a member of our executive board. On top of being a leader in my fraternity, I would like to be on the committee for Relay For Life. I hope to continue my responsibilities as Greek Recruitment Chair and get the Greek community involved. Throughout the next year, I will play a major role in the building and rising of a new student group known as the University of Cincinnati Commuters Association. As one of the members of the executive board of this group, I would like to strengthen its membership and manpower. If I can get these leadership roles, maintain my grades, facilitate growth in my current groups, and utilize the honors leadership development opportunities, I will be well on my way to being a successful leader.
My ultimate goal is to be a father with a job that allows me to support my family and be a dad. My definition of being a dad is being there for my family foremost. Hopefully, I will have a job as an Aerospace Engineer in a smaller town. I would like to be proud of my life and the work I do. My career goal is to be the manager of a team of engineer and lead them to do great things. Engineering is a field that is centered on teamwork and communication. I am planning on my leadership development helping me to become this person. My academic success and co-op opportunities will allow me to attain a job that provides my necessities. I would like a job that is not too time consuming but pays well. If I can get a job like that, I will be able to be the dad I want to be. The only way I can become a good leader and learn how to lead effectively is if I get practice. Therefore, getting the leadership positions I aim to acquire will increase the probability of me reaching the point in my career I hope to reach.
Once I am a successful Aerospace Engineer and the world’s best dad, I will be sure to give back to the places and groups that helped me reach the point I am at. I realize that without a good community and educational facility, I will not make it to where I want to go in life. Also, I hope to continue my involvement in Relay For Life after I graduate: be it in Cincinnati or wherever I end up. Hopefully, my kids will grow up with great aspirations and get involved with many groups within the community that will provide me with the opportunity to give back to my community. I want to be the kind of dad who helps with Boy Scouts, Little League coaching, and education. I want to give my community more than money. When I have gotten where I want to go, I want to be able to pass on what I learned and anything else I have to offer to those who are willing to listen. As an adult, an engineer, and a leader in the community, I hope to provide the best learning environment for my family and those around me.
On the whole, developing my leadership skills throughout my life is the best way to get to the point that I would like to reach. Without leadership, I will not get the kind of job that will allow me to be the father I want to be. I will not be able to be a leader within my community. Most of all, I will not be able to be the leader for my children and their friends. Ultimately, that is what I want to do with my life. I want to be around to help my family and friends in anything they wish to accomplish in their lives. When I grow up, I want to be the kind of father that my own dad was.
