Relay For Life Greek Recruitment Co-Chair
Summary:
My job on the Relay For Life committee was entitled Greek Recruitment Co-Chair. Essentially, my job was to assist the Greek community with anything Relay For Life related. I emailed team captains with pertinent information about team captain meetings. On one occasion I gave team captains fund raising suggestions. Through email, I made sure that Relay was on everybody’s mind at all time keeping them updating on our current team sign-up and fundraising situation. I answered all questions pertaining to Relay and forwarded emails I could not answer to my superiors. Overall, my job was to keep the Greek community in the loop of information and get them excited for Relay.

Project Information
1. Provide a brief overview/abstract of your proposed honors experiential learning project.
UC Honors students will create an experiential learning project in conjunction with UC’s Colleges Against Cancer and Relay For Life. Honors students will be required to participate in both Colleges Against Cancer and Relay For Life Planning Committee Meetings (a once a week commitment). Each student would also be required to take on a leadership role as either a committee (co)chair or take responsibility of a special project (self designed or delegated by a member of the RFL Leadership Team). Students would write a reflective essay on their leadership development at the end of Spring quarter (or write their experiences in a blog or journal throughout the year) and include their Relay involvement in their e-portfolio.
2. Clearly state how each of the following elements will be exhibited in your work:
a. Substantial Content and Quality within Leadership Theme
As a leadership team we believe the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership outlined by Kouzes and Posner in The Leadership Challenge are most appropriate to help an emerging student leader build a strong skill set and positively impact our organization. Each student will meet with a member of the leadership team to go over the five principles (Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart). This meeting would help the student-leader assess his or her strengths and weaknesses. The student would identify some action items to help build on these principles and reflect upon their progress in their reflective essays. The student would meet with a member of our leadership team two other times after the initial meeting and one last time post-Relay to assess their growth at the end of the year.
b. Connection to Academic Goals and Theories
There is room in CAC and Relay For Life for students to connect their position to any major on campus. Some roles are obvious (COB Marketing student or DAAP Graphic Design student working as a chair of the Marketing and Public Relations Committee) and others will rely on the leadership, group facilitation, networking, and interpersonal skills built through committee work to connect to a student’s major. This connection would reflected on in the student’s reflective essay.
c. Initiative, Independence and Creativity
Each committee position functions as an individual organization. The student in a committee chair position would have loose guidelines and responsibilities, but would ultimately be responsible for any and all projects and initiatives he or she would want to implement in his or her committee.
d. Reflection & Dissemination
Students would be able to reflect upon their experiences through either reflective essays at the end of Spring quarter, blog, or activity journal. The students would use the prompts given by the University Honors Program. To disseminate their projects/ committee work students would add their projects into their e-portfolios. Students could also add their projects (if applicable) to the Relay For Life and Colleges Against Cancer Facebook pages for the UC chapters as well as state and national chapters. Also, much publicity is generated from the size of Relay For Life and the prominence of the American Cancer Society and students should be “on the look out” for ways to disseminate their projects with Relay and CAC publicity.
e. Advisor (list the person’s name, title, and contact information)
The project advisor for this project would be a member or the Leadership Team that is most directly connected to the student’s committee or special project. Below is a list of the members of the Leadership Team:
Anthony Voveris ([email protected]), Event Chair of Mission
Megan Hathaway ([email protected]), Event Chair of Production
Michelle Prinzo ([email protected]), Event Chair of Recruitment
Andrea Ruckreigal ([email protected]), CAC President
Florence Lucas ([email protected]), RFL Mentor
Andrea Shuff ([email protected]), ACS Staff Partner
The Leadership team will be trained on the principles of leadership discussed in The Leadership Challenge and for their mentoring role through resources developed and used in the Center for the First Year Expereince and Learning Communities. Modifications to these resources will be overseen by FYE’s Assistant Director, Dr. Gregory Metz.

f. Budget (if applicable)
In most cases the students’ budget would be built into the Relay For Life and/or CAC student organization budget. In some cases the Leadership team would request the student come up with the funds for his or her individual project. Budget would be individual based on the student’s committee or project. Reflection: Greek Info Night was an evening devoted to informing and encouraging the Greek community about everything Relay related. I designed the flyer and distributed it to the Greek chapters. The Team Recruitment PowerPoint is a tool I utilized throughout the time leading up to Relay. I used it to give a presentation at some of the Fraternity houses to get members excited and ready to fund raise. |
