English 112
As an engineering student, technical writing comes naturally. However, creativity is often lost in technical writing. English 112 focused on the development of creative description. Although this style of writing was not my norm, I was encouraged to step out of my comfort zone and develop my creative writing skills. In the future I most certainly will have to step out of my comfort zone in school and the work place. I will have to take classes and will be given jobs that I do not like. When this arises, I will have to alter my game plan and roll with the punches. One of the best ways to deal with problems that are uncomfortable is to ask for help and assistance. Working with others is a great way to approach a difficult task. Another key topic learned in English 112 is that the best way to get someone’s attention is to relate to him or her. In papers I wrote, the goal was to identify an object with which others could relate: a favorite game or pet. That would grab their attention and include them. The same approach can be used in other aspects of life.
"A Wise, Old Owl" is an essay that shows how insightful and helpful my grandpa is. It shows the process of learning from him, rather thanthe knowledge I obtained. My grandpa is very important to me, and this essay is heartfelt and true. The essay aims to develop description skills and character development that will provide something for the reader to relate to in a short period of time.
"A Day in the Life" delves into how my life changed after my dad was diagnosed with cancer. This piece gives great insight into my past andthe experiences I have been through. The essay aims to develop description skills and put the reader in the position the essay conveys.
English 112 was focused on paying attention to details. Details help readers visualize the situation and put the reader in the place being described. We read short writings that demonstrated a variety of types of description, such as characterization, personification, imagery, and more. Through the course of the quarter, my ability to put the reader in my situation – to hear what I heard, to see what I saw, to feel what I felt – drastically improved. Prior to the class, I focused on the technical aspect of writing. It was very dry and boring. However, I was able to write fantastic short stories that allow the reader to understand where I was coming from after taking the class.
